OGI to Manufacture GIA’s FacetScan Optical Scanner
March 08, 07
OGI Systems has teamed up with the Gemological Institute of America (GIA) to manufacture the new GIA FacetScan Optical Scanner for distribution through GIA’s Instrument division, the company announced.
The GIA FacetScan Optical Scanner is a high-resolution, non-contact optical measuring device for diamonds, designed specifically for jewelry retailers. FacetScan’s software includes the GIA Facetware Cut Estimator Database, so the device can scan a diamond, capture proportion measurements, and return an estimated GIA Cut Grade in a matter of seconds.
The scanner and its operating system were designed by OGI Systems with the GIA, which conducted extensive tests to ensure the device’s accuracy, precision, and ease-of-use. The agreement follows an eight-month development phase and a three-month beta test with retail jewelers. GIA Instruments demonstrated the device at the recent Tucson AGTA gem show.
GIA FacetScan Optical Scanner is a portable, plug ‘n play device compatible with Windows XP, which does not require a separate computer or special video adapter. The package also includes a GIA Laboratory-measured Reference Stone in order to facilitate precise calibration. GIA FacetScan is currently being marketed and sold by GIA.
