U.S. Polished Diamond Imports Carat Value Up 2.6%

Polished diamond imports to the United States rose 2.6 percent to $1.36 billion in August from $1.33 billion a year earlier, data from the United States International Trade Commission showed. In terms of volume, imports fell 26.2 percent to 1.075 million carats.
Polished diamond exports from the U.S. grew 10.3 percent to $1.14 billion from $1.03 billion a year earlier. The average per carat value rose 53.4 percent to $1,264 in August.
For the first eight months of the year, the U.S. increased polished imports by 16.3 percent to $13.706 billion from the year earlier period, while volume declined 21.9 percent to 9,040,613 carats.
The U.S. exported 21,170,165 carats worth $9.645 billion over the first eight months of 2008, representing an average value of $455.57 p/c.
