Michelle Obama Wears Diamond Earrings to State Dinner

November 29, 09 by Edon Ophir

Demonstrating the glamour that surrounded U.S. President Barack Obama's first state dinner Tuesday night, First Lady Michelle Obama wore rose-cut diamond earrings to the evening affair.

The dinner, honoring Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Sing, was rife with U.S.-Indian symbolism. The rose-cut, amber, and tourmaline pear-shaped earrings Michelle Obama wore were meant to integrate both Eastern and Western design elements, said Bochic designer David Joseph, who designed the earrings especially for the First Lady.

"We were drawn to the orange hue of the natural amber and the rose color of the rubellite tourmaline, which are traditional Indian colors," Joseph said. "We also added rose cut diamonds to create a vintage feel."

Michelle Obama has been regarded as a style icon by many since her husband took office last year, bringing attention to major fashion houses and lesser-known labels alike with her clothing and accessories choices.

Her choice of exotic jewelry could trigger mass-appeal for oversized statement earrings and other jewelry styles that originate in countries such as India, Turkey, Morocco and Spain.
