Gem-Encrusted Meteorite Gaming Chips up for Auction

November 24, 11 by IDEX Online Staff Reporter

(IDEX Online News) – The stakes are always high when it comes to auctions, but one lot sure to have bidders putting on their poker faces at next week’s Magnificent Jewels sale at Christie’s Hong Kong is a set of multi-gem gaming chips, designed and created by the Swedish artist and jeweler Kristian Ståhl.

Each of the 120 chips is created from a calibrated circular slice from the Muonionalusta meteorite, which crashed to earth in a remote part of northern Sweden almost one million years ago. The outer frames of the chips are made of 18 karat white gold and set with a total of 5,160 gems, including diamonds, rubies and sapphires.

The meteorite is made of iron and nickel, along with some other exotic metals and rare earth minerals, which are the main ingredients needed to produce man-made steel – or 'Ståhl' in Swedish.

The designer is no stranger to using age-old materials for his “out of the box” luxury projects. He created a set of dice from Siberian mammoth ivory, which were auctioned at Sotheby's Hermitage Gala Dinner in London in 2010.

"Hong Kong is the right location to auction this unique set," said Ståhl. "There's a collector out there who is going to buy this set, knowing that this piece is a sure bet and not a gamble."

Christie's Magnificent Jewels auction is due to take place on November 29.
