Gold Producer Ghana to Chair Kimberley Process in 2027

November 25, 25 by John Jeffay

(IDEX Online) - Ghana, one of the world's smallest diamond-producing nations, is to chair the Kimberley Process (KP) in 2027.

It was appointed vice chair for 2026, and will assume the chair for 2027 in line with normal practice, it was announced last week at the KP plenary in Dubai. There had been speculation that chair would go to the US, Brazil or Japan.

Ghana, better known for its gold production, and represented by the Ghana Gold Board, will become the first West African nation to chair KP since its inception in 2003. The current vice chair is Thailand. The position of chair for 2026 remains open.

Thailand is not a diamond producer but does cut and polish some diamonds and other gems.

Ghana is a one of the world's smallest diamond producers, with an output of around 330,000 carats a year, but it is one of the largest gold producers in Africa.

The UAE was chair in 2024, and is, exceptionally, serving this year as custodian chair, with no vice chair, in order to maintain leadership continuity during the current Year of Best Practice.
