Jwaneng 28.88 Sells for $2.7m

May 04, 26 by John Jeffay

(IDEX Online) - The Jwaneng 28.88 sold for HKD 21 million (USD 2.7 million) at Sotheby's Hong Kong, just shy of its HKD 22 million (USD 2.8 million) high estimate.

The unmounted 28.88-carat round brilliant internally flawless D color, Type IIa diamond was recovered from the Jwaneng mine in Botswana and led the High Jewelry auction on 23 April.

It was cut from a 114.83-carat rough to a "lucky" weight - 28.88 carats - with three eights. In Chinese symbolism, eight signifies prosperity, while the number two denotes harmony and balance.

The178-lot auction, including items by Harry Winston, Cartier and Van Cleef & Arpels, and Ronald Abram, brought in a total of HKD 256.9 million (USD 32.8 million) with an 89% sell-through.

A Ronald Abram platinum ring set with a cushion-shaped 15.33 carat sapphire, flanked by two trapeze-shaped diamonds sold midway between its high and low estimates, for HKD 15.6 million (USD 1.99 million).
