Dubai Creates Dedicated Lab-Grown Division

September 02, 26 by John Jeffay

(IDEX Online) - Dubai Multi Commodities Centre (DMCC) says it has established a dedicated lab-grown diamond division, as trade in the stones almost doubled last year to a record 76.9 million carats.

It marks the formal and institutional separation of lab-grown and natural diamonds within one of the world's largest diamond trading hubs.

And it reinforces the perception of lab-growns as a separate, mature category rather than a substitute for natural stones.

The new division will operate separately from Dubai's natural-diamond and colored-stone activities and will bring together lab-grown diamond producers, manufacturers, traders, investors, financial-service providers, technology companies and industrial users.

Ahmed Bin Sulayem, executive chairman and chief executive officer of DMCC, of which the Dubai Diamond Exchange (DDE) is a part, said lab-growns needed "dedicated market infrastructure and a distinct economic case of their own," developed alongside the natural-diamond trade rather than replacing it.

Based on current reporting, no other diamond bourse has announced a dedicated lab-grown diamond division or vertical comparable to DMCC's move in Dubai.

The 76.9 million carats traded in 2025 represents a 91.5% increase on the 40.2 million carats recorded in 2024, based on DMCC's year-on-year growth figure.
