Graff 7.85-ct Ring Fetches $256,000 at Christie's New York

October 18, 26 by John Jeffay

(IDEX Online) - A Graff ring featuring a 7.85-carat, D-color diamond sold for $256,000 at Christie's Jewels Online auction in New York, leading a sale that generated $9.32 million.

The square emerald-cut diamond was graded VS1 clarity, although the GIA report noted that it had the potential to achieve an internally flawless grade. Its pre-sale estimate was $180,000 to $280,000.

The online auction ran from October 6 to 15 and offered 266 lots, featuring signed jewelry from Graff, Van Cleef & Arpels, Cartier, Bulgari, Harry Winston, Tiffany & Co. and David Webb.

The second-highest result among the leading diamond lots was $243,200 for a ring set with an 8.17-carat, D-color, internally flawless round brilliant diamond. It was offered without reserve and fell short of its $250,000 low estimate.

A heart-shaped, 6.52-carat, D-color, VVS1-clarity Type IIa diamond ring sold for $204,800, against an estimate of $150,000 to $250,000. An unmounted 5.34-carat, D-color, internally flawless pear-shaped Type IIa diamond achieved $192,200, above its estimate of $120,000 to $180,000.

Other diamond jewelry also attracted strong bidding. A necklace set with 53 emerald-cut diamonds weighing between 1 and 2.01 carats each sold for $179,200, within its estimate of $130,000 to $230,000. A lot comprising a 9.04-carat, I-color, VS1-clarity emerald-cut diamond ring and a David Webb yellow-gold ring jacket achieved $166,400, well above its estimate of $70,000 to $100,000.

A necklace set with 47 fancy light yellow diamonds, ranging from 0.32 to 3.01 carats, also sold for $166,400, against an estimate of $120,000 to $180,000.

Colored gemstones and signed jewels produced some of the strongest results relative to estimates. A Bulgari necklace featuring peridot, sapphire and diamonds sold for $153,600, more than twice its high estimate of $60,000.

Bulgari sapphire and diamond earrings achieved $70,400 against an estimate of $20,000 to $30,000, while a 1960s Bulgari gold Melone evening bag sold for $76,800, compared with an estimate of $20,000 to $30,000.

A pair of Graff colored-diamond and diamond earrings sold for $96,000, against an estimate of $40,000 to $60,000. Harry Winston diamond cluster earrings also achieved $96,000, compared with an estimate of $40,000 to $60,000.

A Tiffany & Co. Jean Schlumberger sapphire and diamond Cooper bracelet sold for $61,440, above its estimate of $30,000 to $50,000.

The results were not uniformly strong. A Van Cleef & Arpels ring featuring a 5.22-carat, D-color, VVS2-clarity emerald-cut diamond, accompanied by pear- and round-cut diamond accents, sold for $140,800, below its estimate of $150,000 to $250,000.
