U.S.: Over $13.4 Billion Spent Online in November Shopping

December 04, 07 by Edahn Golan

Online holiday spending grew in the U.S. by 8 percent in November compared to November 2006, surpassing $13.4 billion, according to comScore. The largest growth was noted on Thanksgiving Day (November 22) when sales grew 29 percent to $270 million.

The top selling day in November was Cyber Monday (November 26) with $733 million in sales, marginally higher than sales on Thursday, November 29.

The last week of November was the strongest. “Beginning with a record $733 million on Cyber Monday, each of the next three days also surpassed $700 million in sales, resulting in more than $4 billion in online spending during the week,” said comScore Chairman Gian Fulgoni.

A number of the traditionally more popular product categories for holiday gifts saw strong growth in dollar sales versus last year: video games, consoles and accessories (+170 percent), toys (+36 percent), computer hardware (+21 percent) and sports and fitness (+19 percent). Data on jewelry sales was not made available.

The majority of shopping was done from work (45.5 percent) and home (44.1 percent).

ComScore forecasts a 20 percent growth in online sales during the November-December holiday season, reaching $29.5 billion.
