Gitanjali Kicks Off IIJW By Backing Pro-Girl-Child Campaign

August 19, 12 by Vinod Kuriyan

(IDEX Online News) - The India International Jewellery Week (IIJW), a five day jewelry promotion event organized by India’s Gem & Jewellery Export Promotion Council (GJEPC), kicked off in Mumbai on Sunday. The opening event, featuring DTC Sightholder Gitanjali Group’s Envi and Nizam jewelry lines, grabbed media and consumer attention through strong co-branding with the Beti (‘daughter’ in Hindi) campaign.

The campaign, run in collaboration with Gr8 magazine, is aimed at countering violence against women and eradicating female foeticide.

IIJW features top-end jewelry brands, design houses and manufacturers showcasing their product in a fashion-show setting. Each participating company has a one-hour slot. With big design names and participation on the ramp from the Indian film and television industry, the event has high consumer-interest value.

The GJEPC’s aim is to promote Indian jewelry design and fabrication capabilities to the widest possible professional and consumer audience as part of its bid to infuse high value into the ‘Made in India’ label for jewelry.

The opening day event provided a strong draw with Indian film and television celebrities walking the ramp for the Beti campaign. Gitanjali chairman Mehul Choksi observed, “As a socially concerned corporate citizen, Gitanjali has taken up different initiatives for the empowerment and upliftment of socially underprivileged sections of society. We are now extending our support and involvement to a new sector by espousing the cause of women who have been discriminated against. Through Beti, Gitanjali will identify causes in need of a voice and assistance, and will conduct events throughout the year across cities to raise funds for them.”

IIJW will run over the next few days, with a grand finale on the night of August 23, which is the official post-show event after the first day of the India International Jewellery Show (IIJS), the leading Indian gem and jewelry fair.
