Strong Rise in India’s June Rough Diamond Imports

India’s imports of rough diamonds in June rose 24.57 percent in volume to 16.6 million carats worth $946.15 million, a 35.7 percent rise in value. The average value of rough diamond imports was $57 p/c (per carat).
According to provisional data published by the Gem & Jewellery Export Promotion Council (GJEPC), India imported in the first three months of the fiscal year 40.223 million carats of rough diamonds worth $2.47 billion. This is a 3.4 percent decline in volume compared to the first quarter of last year, and a 14 percent rise in value.
The average value of India’s rough imports in the April-June period was $61.41 p/c.
Conversely, rough diamond exports declined sharply in June. According to the GJEPC, India exported 2.269 million carats worth $46.24 million, declining 21.28 percent in volume and 8.64 percent in value. The average value of exports was $20.38 p/c.
Exports were on a downward slope on a quarterly basis as well. Exports of 5.432 million carats worth $128.23 million were 35.24 percent below last year’s figures in volume and 2.59 percent in value.
