First Quarter Loss for Collectors Universe

November 11, 07 by Edahn Golan

Collectors Universe, parent company of gem lab GCAL, reported net revenues of $10.8 million and a loss from continuing operations of $100,000 for the first fiscal quarter of 2008.

The 9 percent rise in revenues is attributable to an 8 percent increase in service fees.

The firm noted a 58 percent increase in jewelry grading revenues, however added that the decrease in gross profit margin (from 56 percent to 52 percent) was primarily attributable to its investment in the diamond and gem lab.

Collectors Universe provides value-added authentication and grading services to dealers and collectors of high-value collectibles. It announced plans to launch a certified diamond exchange later this year.
