603 Carat Diamond Mined at Letseng

October 04, 06 by IDEX Online Staff Reporter

An unusual and rare find at the Letseng diamond mine in Lesotho – a 603 carat white diamond. Gem Diamonds, which operates and owns the mine with the Government of the Kingdom of Lesotho, named it the Lesotho Promise.

According to Gem Diamonds, the D color diamond is the 15th largest diamond ever found. The largest diamond previously found at Letseng was the 601 carat Lesotho Brown, recovered in 1967. The Letseng mine is known for its unusually large diamonds.

The Lesotho Promise is being put up for sale today, 4 October 2006, through a private tender in Antwerp. The tender process is expected to be completed by Monday, 9 October, with an announcement of the winning bid on the same day at the HRD, in Antwerp.
